What this pinyin converter covers
The converter matches your text against the official HSK 1–6 word lists used across HanziQuest — around 5,000 words in total. It treats multi-character words as single units, so 你好 converts as one word (nǐ hǎo) rather than two separate characters, and it always shows pinyin with tone marks. Any character outside the lists is flagged, so you always know exactly what the tool can and cannot do.
Tone marks and the reverse direction
Tone marks are essential: mā, má, mǎ and mà are four different syllables with four different meanings. When you convert from pinyin back to characters, the tool normalizes your spelling (ü can be typed as v) and lists the HSK words that match, so you can find the character you are trying to remember. Typing syllables with spaces, for example wo ai ni, gives the most reliable results.

FAQ
How accurate is this pinyin converter?
It converts every word it recognizes from the official HSK 1–6 word lists — about 5,000 words. Multi-character words are matched as whole words, which keeps tones reliable. Characters outside the lists are marked with a dash so you can see where coverage stops.
Why does one pinyin spelling show several characters?
Mandarin is full of homophones: nǐ can be 你 or 拟, and shì can be 是, 事 or 市. Tone marks narrow the possibilities, and matching whole words narrows them further. When you search pinyin, the tool lists all HSK candidates so you can pick the character you meant.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser using word lists bundled with the page. You can paste private notes or homework without them leaving your device, and no account is needed.
Can I convert a whole sentence or paragraph?
Yes. Paste as much text as you like — the converter segments it word by word and shows the pinyin for each word in order.
Does it support traditional characters?
Many HSK entries include their traditional form, so traditional spellings such as 我們 are recognized where the lists provide them. The stroke order tool also includes traditional characters where stroke data exists.
