What is HanziQuest?

HanziQuest is a free, browser-based Mandarin learning website designed for overseas beginners learning Chinese. There is no registration, no payment, and no ads. You can practice HSK vocabulary, pinyin, and sentences through short 3-8 minute game sessions.

How it works

HanziQuest combines quick games, reading practice, and local progress tracking so learners can build a simple daily routine.

Hanzi Match

Match HSK 1 Hanzi to their pinyin and English meaning with quick feedback after every answer.

Pinyin Typing Race

Practice typing pinyin with tone marks and build speed through short, focused rounds.

Listen & Match

Hear a Mandarin word and choose its English meaning. Wrong answers get graded hints and missed words return for a same-session re-check.

Listen & Type

Hear Mandarin audio and type the pinyin you hear. Tiered hints help you recover, then missed words are re-checked before the round ends.

Sentence Builder

Arrange HSK 1 words into useful beginner sentences with English support and helpful hints.

Sentence Match

Match beginner Chinese sentences to their English meanings and build confidence with sentence patterns.

Swipe Flashcards

Swipe right if you know the word, left to review. Tap to reveal pinyin and English. Fast, fun, and low pressure.

Tone Rollercoaster

Practice Mandarin tones with visual contour matching. Learn to hear and recognize the difference between mฤ, mรก, mวŽ, and mร .

Radical Builder

Build Chinese characters from their radical parts. Learn how ๅฅณ + ๅญ = ๅฅฝ and more!

Hanzi Treasure Hunt

Find the right Chinese character on a treasure map grid. Practice character recognition with fun visual matching rounds.

Stroke Tracing

Trace Chinese characters stroke by stroke with instant feedback. Learn correct stroke order for HSK 1-2 characters, one careful stroke at a time.

  • Graded Chinese reading includes vocabulary cards and quizzes.
  • The daily challenge gives you a small practice path for consistency.
  • Progress tracking stays in your browser, so no account is needed.

Learning principles

  • Short sessions: 3-8 minutes per game, designed for daily practice.
  • Pinyin with tone marks appears after answering, so learners connect sound, meaning, and characters.
  • Feedback should help you notice what to improve, not just say wrong.
  • Weak vocabulary can return through review as you practice.
  • Classic Chinese strategy stories add cultural context that makes words easier to remember.

HSK levels

HSK stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, the standard Chinese proficiency test. HanziQuest covers HSK 1 through HSK 6, with vocabulary games, sentence practice, and stories for each level. You can browse the HSK level overview to choose where to start.

Our philosophy

  • Learning should feel like play, not homework.
  • Small daily habits beat occasional marathon sessions.
  • Cultural stories make vocabulary more memorable.
  • Mandarin practice should be free and accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Technical details

HanziQuest is built with Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. The learning data is local, progress is stored in your browser, and the site uses no server database or tracking system. Pronunciation uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis feature.
