Privacy Policy

This policy explains how HanziQuest handles data. In short: the site does not require accounts or third-party trackers. Detailed learning progress stays in your browser, while a small set of anonymous events helps us improve lesson completion and reliability.

1. Introduction

  • HanziQuest is a free Mandarin learning website with short browser-based games and reading practice.
  • HanziQuest is operated as a personal hobby project. You do not need an account, registration, login, or payment to use the site.

2. Information We Collect

  • We do not collect personal information.
  • We do not use cookies for tracking.
  • We do not use third-party analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or similar tracking services.
  • We do not ask for or store email addresses, names, answers, or other identifying information.
  • To understand whether lessons are useful, HanziQuest sends a limited set of anonymous activity events to its own server. These events can include the page path, selected HSK 1 or HSK 2 level, lesson duration, and score.
  • The event payload does not include your IP address. Like most hosted websites, basic server access logs may be created by the web server for reliability and security.

3. Local Storage

  • Game progress, scores, streaks, and practice history may be stored in your browser's LocalStorage.
  • Detailed learning progress stays on your device. HanziQuest does not send vocabulary answers or your full progress history to a server.
  • A random anonymous identifier is also stored in LocalStorage so self-hosted events from the same browser can be counted without an account.
  • You can clear this data at any time by clearing your browser's LocalStorage or browser site data.
  • Clearing browser data will reset your HanziQuest progress and create a new anonymous identifier on your next visit.

4. Speech Synthesis

  • The pronunciation feature uses your browser's built-in SpeechSynthesis API.
  • SpeechSynthesis is a browser-native feature. HanziQuest does not send audio data or pronunciation data to any server.
  • SpeechSynthesis availability and voice quality depend on your browser, operating system, and device.

5. Third-Party Services

  • We do not use third-party analytics services, advertising trackers, or social tracking pixels.
  • We do not embed third-party content such as ads, social widgets, or external media.
  • Anonymous usage events are processed by HanziQuest's own application and written to its server logs. They are not sold or shared for advertising.

6. Children's Privacy

  • HanziQuest is suitable for learners of all ages.
  • We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
  • Because there is no account creation, HanziQuest does not require age verification.

7. Data Security

  • Since learning progress stays in your browser, the security of that progress data depends on your device and browser security.
  • If you want to keep your progress private, we recommend not sharing your device or browser profile with others.

8. Changes to This Policy

  • We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.
  • When changes are made, the "Last updated" date will be updated.
  • Continued use of HanziQuest after changes means you accept the updated policy.
