About the word lists

This checker uses the official HSK 1–6 word lists (~5,000 words) with longest-match segmentation, so 我们 counts as one HSK 1 word rather than two characters. All analysis happens locally in your browser.

What the HSK levels mean

HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì, 汉语水平考试) is the standardized test of Mandarin proficiency. It has six levels, from HSK 1 with around 150 everyday words to HSK 6 with around 2,500 words for advanced reading. Knowing which level a text uses helps you choose stories and practice material that fit your current ability.

How the checker reads your text

The checker matches your text against the official HSK 1–6 word lists using longest-match segmentation, the same approach the HanziQuest games use: 我们 is recognized as one HSK 1 word rather than two separate characters. Every recognized word is marked with its level, and characters outside the lists are listed separately as unknown.

FAQ

Which word lists does this checker use?

The official HSK 1–6 word lists — the same vocabulary sets used across HanziQuest, about 5,000 words in total, including the traditional forms provided in the lists.

How is a word's level decided?

The checker matches the longest word it can find at each position. If the same written form appears in more than one HSK list, the lowest level wins, so words are reported at the friendliest level.

What does an unknown character mean?

It means the character is not in any HSK 1–6 list. Names, rare characters, and words added after the lists were published will appear as unknown even if they are common in daily life.

Can this tell me my HSK level?

It is a word-level checker, not an exam. It shows which levels a text draws from and flags unknown words, which is a practical way to estimate whether a reading passage suits your level.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The checker runs locally in your browser using bundled word lists — paste any text without worrying about where it goes.
